TODAY IN HISTORY, Nuremberg, October 1st 1946: After 273 days of deliberations, the international military tribunal announces the verdict in the “major war criminals trial” against the Nazi leadership. Of the 21 defendants, among them former Reich Marshal Hermann Goering, the former Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and the former head of the High Command of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. 12 were convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. The others were given life sentences in some cases, three defendants were acquitted. The Nuremberg trial is unique in history. It was the first trial of war criminals before an international court.
